Children’s Play X-Rays

Explore bones and bodies with your kids! - Free printable x-rays from Tried & TrueMy 4 year old son has been fascinated with the inner workings of our bodies lately so I went looking for x-rays that we could use with our light table to fully explain skeletons to him. Unfortunately, all the pins I found either went to forbidden pages or items for sale. Oh well, guess I’ll just whip some up…how hard could it be?!Kids Play X-Rays : Play - A Tried & True Free Printable

It was actually more involved than I thought it would be! Turns out, googling “Head X-Ray” brings up a lot of really disturbing images. And while a nail in the middle of someone’s head is scientifically amazing, not really the lesson I was going for with my little one!

Free printable x-rays for light tables and more from Tried & True! After hours of looking for just normal x-ray images (as much as I can tell!), I resized and adjusted the contrast to make them as clear as possible and then had my husband draw the corresponding line drawings. Awfully handy having an amazing artist in the family! :D

I printed the x-rays on vellum paper with the drawn images printed on just standard printer paper.  You can either tape the x-rays and drawings together to create a flip book or just leave them separate and have your kids be able to match the drawing to the x-ray. These work great with light tables but you can also just hold them up a window to see the “x-ray” action!

“Celebrate Differences” Autism Awareness Tee

Make a t-shirt celebrating differences for Autism Awareness Month | A Tried & True Project

In honor of April being Autism Awareness month, I thought I’d make t-shirts for the boys to celebrate diversity. Do you know that 1 in 50 kids will be diagnosed with Autism? So much more money, time, and resources need to be focused on Autism research! Along with that, we also need to work on community-wide acceptance, understanding, and assistance. And what better place to start than with our kids!

“So Lucky” Coloring Print

Print out the "So Lucky" Coloring Print from Tried & TrueI’ve been working on this “So Lucky” Coloring Print since before Valentine’s Day and now I’m super excited to share it with you all! I was thrilled when Linda from Craftaholics Anonymous asked if I could make a exclusive print for St. Patrick’s Day for her website. Are you kidding? I was honored!

Color in the "So Lucky" Coloring Print from Tried & True

I had never drawn a special request before so it was kinda fun having some boundaries to work within. I gotta say, this was the hardest image to color! I colored it three different times and I’m still not 100% happy with any of the results. I’m using my ever handy Spectrum Noir pens in the picture above which worked fine but for some reason, I wasn’t digging the green color scheme. Maybe you’ll have better luck? I’d love to see what you come up with!

Hope you enjoy the “So Lucky” Coloring Print that you can either click on the name or the image below to download. Don’t forget to check out all my other free Coloring Prints!

A few weeks ago, I was sent a copy of Amy Doh’s latest book, Creative Lettering, and while I enjoy most of their publications, I looooooove this book so much! It’s been on my bedside table ever since I received it because I pour over each and every hand-drawn letter before I fall asleep each night. It kinda makes for funky, alphabet-loaded dreams but it’s just so much fun to look at.

Creative Lettering from Lark Crafts reviewed by Tried & TrueI’m funny when it comes to craft books. I thoroughly enjoy reading them and flipping through all the beautiful pictures but I very rarely read through a craft book more than once. Maybe it’s because I don’t want to be too influenced by the ideas and begin to think they’re my own (I hate it when that happens!).

Book Review from Tried & TrueThat’s so not the case with this book! It’s all about inspiration and becoming a better artist. I loved reading about the different pens and pencils each of the artist enjoys using. I’m a mechanical pencil/Pigma Micron 01 kind of girl. As for my favorite letter…hmm, I’m still on the fence on that one. Maybe “A?”

Alphabet sample from Creative LetteringEach of the artists featured by Jenny Doh also share one of their original alphabets which are all just amazing. One of my favorites is Lighthearted Gothic from Madeline Tompkins. Makes me want to break out my calligraphy set!

Original sketch and finished coloring print

Inspired by Creative Lettering, I thought it might be fun to show you guys how one of my Coloring Prints starts off. You can see that my “Let It Go” print started as just a small image I penciled onto gridded paper. After I was happy with the letter and image placement, I went over the pencil with a thin-tipped pen (Pigma Micron 01) and carefully erased all the pencil markings.

I then  scanned the image into my computer (with my phone!), cleaned up the lines a bit in Photoshop and adjusted anything that just doesn’t look right. If you look closely you can see I decided to change the “J” from lower case to upper case. Can’t give you the theory behind why I did that…just didn’t look right, you know?

Just print out the original coloring print and color inThen I just format the page to the desired size and upload it to the world wide web. All you have to do is print out the PDF file and color it any way you’d like! I used my Spectrum Noir markers again because of the paper I used. If you’ve seen some of my other Coloring Prints, you know I usually print out my images on heavy-textured watercolor paper but I decided to change things up a bit and go with vellum paper this time. Seemed to worked nicely with the airy feel of this print. What do you think?
