Life Is Sweet Baby Shower

We threw my sister and brother-in-law a shower a couple weekends ago and had an absolute blast just kicking back with friends and family. We went with the whole vintage soda shop theme and printed invitations with “Life Is Sweet” on them. Really, it was just an excuse to have corn dogs, fries, root beer and Coke floats, banana splits, sugar cones, chocolate sauce and of course, sprinkles. Good thing my sister didn’t have gestational diabetes!

For decorations, my sister, Adriana (the non-pregnant one who had the Little Golden Books shower last year) cut scalloped edges from red/white striped wrapping paper. Super easy way to tie in the whole theme. LED balloons lit the path to the entryway and inexpensive paper fans hanging from the outdoor lights added a nice, colorful touch

The table settings were casual with white linen tablecloths and a scalloped, wrapping paper circle in the center. The floral centerpieces were a cinch to put together and looked pretty gosh darn cute. Of course, we got the idea for an ice cream sundae made out of carnations from Pinterest. You  can see the entire Life Is Sweet inspiration board on Pinterest.

I printed some “Sweet Wishes” dedication cards to go on the tables as well. I’ll be sharing the free printable for these as well as invitations in a couple days.

We wanted people to sign-in on something that could be used years down the line, so everyone signed in on vintage (reproduced) Candyland playing cards. I love the idea of my little nephew playing this game years from now and talking about all these people who showed up to love him before he was even born. How loved he already is!

Because we didn’t have enough sugar at the party already (hah), we sent guests home with a miniature lollipop (Amazon, $13.45). You should know that each wrapper comes with some pretty annoying print. Not decorative and definitely not cute but hey, you can’t beat the price so we just added some 2 inch stickers for instant customization.

I already mentioned that we had corn dogs, french fries with four different dipping sauces, ice cream, floats, banana splits but the icing on the cake, in my opinion, was the cotton candy machine we rented. I don’t even like cotton candy but how much fun is that?! And, of course, no Far West Texas party is complete without both cultures being represented…Shiner and Tecate!

The entertainment for the night (other than watching all the kids running around all hopped up on sugar!) took the form of a hanging frame. Everyone took turns fooling around and taking pictures next to the chalked reproduction of “Life Is Sweet” and as soon as I get them printed and bound, Angelica and Tracy will have pictures of all those in attendance.

So, there you have it, Little Man! Your sweet shower is done and now it’s pretty close to the time for the world to meet you. We are all so excited and can’t wait to spoil you rotten. We love you, Gelica and Tracy!

Happy Birthday, Max Monster!

My little man turns one today and I was planning on writing this wonderful “Letter to My Child” kind of post full of sentimentality, mushiness and tears. Something that would touch on the absolute joy Max has brought into my life. Something that would mention his quick birth being just like his personality, eager to take on the world. Something that would put into words the difference the second trip on the Mommy Merry-Go-Round has been.

I definitely would have talked in length about how Jack (my first born) brought out places and feelings inside me I never knew existed. Max, however, showed me just how much I loved those places, feelings…how much I loved being a mother. Somehow the nervousness associated with the responsibility of raising a human being has been replaced with the peace of knowing these little human beings are actually raising me. It’s a journey and we’re all along for the ride. I wake up every single day, thankful that I have another chance to be a better mother than the day before. Sometimes I succeed and others…meh, not so much. My children may be learning shapes, colors and how to share but I’m learning patience, flexibility and how to truly love unconditionally.

Like I said, I was fully prepared to write a sweet little post about the day Max was born but then life happened and Jack had a whirlwind of a sensitive day and my inner calm was shaken just enough for that post to go out the window. So instead, you get this. One slightly frazzled mama writing about the ups and downs of motherhood. Emotionally exhausted from a trying day but still very aware that she just may be the luckiest girl in the world. So yes…Happy birthday, My Dearest Max Monster! May you always see the world with such joy and enthusiasm as you do now. You and your brother are my greatest joys.

Little Golden Books Shower: Mini Apple Pies

Since we were doing a Little Golden Books theme, we thought we would do an All-American Cookout food theme. Two types of hamburgers, seasoned fries, lemonade…and apple pie ala mode! But of course, we couldn’t just do just your plain, run-of-the-mill apple pie. Noooo. Let’s make things 10 times more difficult and make individually-sized Mini Apple Pies. Shesh.

But you gotta admit…they are pretty cute, huh?

Since the process of assembly was going to take a while, we decided to cut a few corners and just buy premade pie shells. We could have cheated even more and just have bought canned pie filling but Costco was having a sale on apples. In retrospect, perhaps the canned version might have come out better since ours were a bit on the dry side. We brushed the top of the lattice with an egg wash and sprinkled a bit of sugar as well.

Pretty straight forward, just cut circles in crust large enough to fill majority of a cupcake tin and fill with pie filling. Roll out extra dough, cut 3/4 inch strips and layout on pies in lattice design. Make sure to kinda pinch the lattice to the outer pie crust so that they don’t separate while baking. Brush with egg wash and bake for about 30 minutes or until crusts are golden brown. Hope you enjoy!

I’m not a huge fan of most shower games so we decided to keep it simple for the LGB shower. Thankfully, Pink Tea came to the rescue with her Alternative Names puzzle! I edited it a bit to match our theme but otherwise it’s the same.
