Vegetarian Fruit Snacks | A Tried & True Project

Gelatin is one of those sneaky non-vegetarian things. That’s a huge bummer since it’s in fun things like tons of candy, marshmallows, Jell-O and fruit snacks. That last one is especially dire if you’re the parent of two crazy little boys who just happen to LOVE fruit snacks. I mean, really. What kid doesn’t?! Luckily, pectin based fruit snacks are becoming easier to find. Annie’s Fruit Snacks are some of our favorites but we can easily finish an entire box in one sitting! That’s ok if it’s the only way your kids will chill out and let you walk around Target for a bit but they definitely can get expensive as a daily snack. But…

Vegetarian Fruit Snacks | A Tried & True Project

<cue the fanfare> Agar Agar to the rescue! It’s a plant based thickening agent that is often used in Asian cuisine and a vegetarian mother’s best friend. You can find Agar Agar flakes in the Asian section of most grocery stores. This recipe calls for Agar Agar powder which is a bit more difficult to get your hands on. I suggest checking out your local Asian grocery store. I love that place!

I hope you and, more importantly, your kids enjoy these! Even if you’re not vegetarian/vegan, if you’ve got agar agar and some fruit juice, you’re halfway there to a super quick and healthy snack. Any mother can appreciate that! :)

Life Is Sweet Baby Shower

We threw my sister and brother-in-law a shower a couple weekends ago and had an absolute blast just kicking back with friends and family. We went with the whole vintage soda shop theme and printed invitations with “Life Is Sweet” on them. Really, it was just an excuse to have corn dogs, fries, root beer and Coke floats, banana splits, sugar cones, chocolate sauce and of course, sprinkles. Good thing my sister didn’t have gestational diabetes!

For decorations, my sister, Adriana (the non-pregnant one who had the Little Golden Books shower last year) cut scalloped edges from red/white striped wrapping paper. Super easy way to tie in the whole theme. LED balloons lit the path to the entryway and inexpensive paper fans hanging from the outdoor lights added a nice, colorful touch

The table settings were casual with white linen tablecloths and a scalloped, wrapping paper circle in the center. The floral centerpieces were a cinch to put together and looked pretty gosh darn cute. Of course, we got the idea for an ice cream sundae made out of carnations from Pinterest. You  can see the entire Life Is Sweet inspiration board on Pinterest.

I printed some “Sweet Wishes” dedication cards to go on the tables as well. I’ll be sharing the free printable for these as well as invitations in a couple days.

We wanted people to sign-in on something that could be used years down the line, so everyone signed in on vintage (reproduced) Candyland playing cards. I love the idea of my little nephew playing this game years from now and talking about all these people who showed up to love him before he was even born. How loved he already is!

Because we didn’t have enough sugar at the party already (hah), we sent guests home with a miniature lollipop (Amazon, $13.45). You should know that each wrapper comes with some pretty annoying print. Not decorative and definitely not cute but hey, you can’t beat the price so we just added some 2 inch stickers for instant customization.

I already mentioned that we had corn dogs, french fries with four different dipping sauces, ice cream, floats, banana splits but the icing on the cake, in my opinion, was the cotton candy machine we rented. I don’t even like cotton candy but how much fun is that?! And, of course, no Far West Texas party is complete without both cultures being represented…Shiner and Tecate!

The entertainment for the night (other than watching all the kids running around all hopped up on sugar!) took the form of a hanging frame. Everyone took turns fooling around and taking pictures next to the chalked reproduction of “Life Is Sweet” and as soon as I get them printed and bound, Angelica and Tracy will have pictures of all those in attendance.

So, there you have it, Little Man! Your sweet shower is done and now it’s pretty close to the time for the world to meet you. We are all so excited and can’t wait to spoil you rotten. We love you, Gelica and Tracy!

Mint-Ginger Preggo Pills

Don’t you think pregnancy is such an amazing and beautiful time? I seriously loved being pregnant. What I didn’t love was the nasty food aversions I had during the first few months. And while I can’t really complain about my mild morning sickness, I can tell you that I ate more than my fair share of ginger to help with the first trimester “blahs.”

I made the Mint-Ginger Preggo Pills as my submission to the 4th week trial of So You Think You’re Crafty. I most definitely will be using them with my next pregnancy!
