Little Golden Book Shower: Pocket Book Worms Favor

I’m so excited! Just as I was about to sit down and write this entry, I got a wonderful call from my mother…Baby Miles is here! Yay, I’m an Aunt. Which means I get to spoil this kid rotten and not have to worry what it will do to his routine! :D

Since we were expecting about 40+ people at the Little Golden Books shower we threw my sister and brother-in-law, the cost of favors was going to be a bit tricky. We wanted to do something either edible or useful. I’m not a real big fan of knick-knacks that sit on a shelf, constantly reminding me that I don’t dust enough…or ever, really.

So we went with small pockets made from Little Golden Book pages (idea grabbed from diywedding.org) and filled with “book worms.” I bought two 4.5 lb packages of sour gummy worms off Amazon and had more than enough to fill about 60 favors. Just be careful if you’re a big fan of sour things…do not open the bag before you need to fill the pockets! You will inevitably eat one and will not be able to stop. Holy sugar high, Batman.

You can, of course, just make the pockets without any labels but if you’re also throwing a LGB shower, feel free to download my sheet of tabs to be sewn in (Scribd):

Pocket Bookworm Favors

Materials
- Little Golden Book pages
- x-acto knife
- sewing machine
- gummy worms
- printed and cut labels (optional)

Instructions

1. Remove desired amount of pages from book (each page will make two pockets) with an x-acto knife. Cut each page in half.

2. (Optional) Print and cut out the tabs you’ll be sewing in. I layered the white tab over the blue paper (see next instruction).

3. (Optional) Punch out a decorative border so that the blue paper underneath is visible.

4. Gently fold sheet over onto itself, taking care to not crease the middle. Sew along the upper edges.

5. Get your gummy worms ready!

6. Place around 8-10 gummy worms in each package. “One for the pocket, one for me…”

7. Fold the unsewn edge of the pocket in the opposite direction, place your label in the center and sew in place. Repeat 60 more times! Whew. (Actually, it’s much easier if you go step by step (assembly line style) if you plan on making a large amount of these. I was able to finish sewing the first part of the pockets and then stuff and finish them a week later when the worms showed up)

Ok, I’m off to eat some more gummy worms in celebration of my new little nephew!

Little Golden Books Shower: Pinwheel Favors

Since we knew there were going to be a good amount of kids at our Little Golden Books shower, I figured making them their own favors might 1.) make them feel special and more importantly, 2) keep them entertained for a few minutes. Well, I don’t know if they felt special or not but the only reason they were entertained by my cute little handmade pinwheels is because they used them as drumsticks on the trashcans. Oh well.

As you will see, I disassembled a cheap pinwheel (found in the $1 section of Target) to use as my template. Since that dollar section can be hit or miss sometimes, here’s a printable template you can download and print on heavy cardstock:

Little Golden Books Pinwheels

Materials:
- cheap pinwheel or free T&T template
- Little Golden Book (preferably thrifted and well-used)
- scissors
- hole punch
- grommet kit
- wood dowel rods
- wood pegs
- drill

Instructions:

1. First we need to make a template for our pinwheels. You can disassemble one you may just have laying around or you can download my template.

2. Remove pinwheel from wood or plastic stick and carefully pry off both center grommets. Make sure at least one of your pinwheel panels remains intact and not torn.

3. You should now have a template to use for your Little Golden Books pinwheel. If your plastic panel won’t stay flat, place it between a few layers of fabric and iron it on low. Let cool and then remove.

4. Tear out pages from your LGB, copy template and cut out. Use a hole punch for small circles. You’re going to need six panels for each pinwheel and each LGB page fits four. If you cut through three pages at a time, you’ll have enough panels for two pinwheels.

5. Place six panels on a grommet as shown and hammer in place (read your grommet kit for more detailed instructions).

6. Fold panels over and place on second grommet. Carefully hammer grommet shut.

7. Drill a hole in dowel rod large enough to fit your peg about an inch down.

8. Assemble your Little Golden Book pinwheel, using a mallet to securely place peg in rod. Use a drop of wood glue if peg is not secure enough.

9. (optional) If you want to display your pinwheels to look like a bouquet of sorts, just stick them in a container with a  florist foam block.

Little Golden Books Shower: Children’s Book Scramble

I’m not a huge fan of most shower games so we decided to keep it simple for the LGB shower. Thankfully, Pink Tea came to the rescue with her Alternative Names puzzle! I edited it a bit to match our theme but otherwise it’s the same.

Little Golden Books Shower: Pennant Flags

Here’s a super quick and easy way to decorate your own Little Golden Books shower or really, any theme at all. I picked up some pretty beat up LGBs from a local thrift store over a few weeks before the shower. Most of them had quite a bit of battle damage (missing pages, crayon marks, dog bites…) so I didn’t feel so bad cutting them up for this project. You can always use scrapbooking paper if you’re uncomfortable with cutting up books or if your theme doesn’t have books associated with it.

Little Golden Book Pennant Flags

Materials:
- thrifted Little Golden Books (I was kinda picky and only chose classic LGBs)
- x-acto knife
- metal ruler
- bias tape
- sewing machine

Instructions:

1. Remove pages from book using an x-acto knife and keeping as close to the spine as possible.

2. Fold one page in half and draw lines from each uppermost corner to the bottom center, creating a triangle. This will be your template.

3. Copy template onto stack of LGB papers and cut out. You can make your stack as thick as you can possibly cut through with either an knife or with scissors.

4. Insert a flag in between the bias tape and begin sewing. Leave about 4 inches and then insert another flag and sew. Continue until you have reached your desired length.

Little Golden Book Shower: Invitation

The perfect place to start our Little Golden Book themed shower week is, of course, with the invitations! I was lucky enough to find a high resolution image of the inside cover and got those printed with a local company. The blue background paper and the white inset paper were cut and printed at home. After using a decorative punch for both the top and the bottom, I glued the white inset to the blue and then used foam separators (found in scrapbooking section) to attach them to the background. A bit involved, I know, but I really like how the final invitation came out!

Here are the files I used to make the invitations: Background (flickr)White Inset (illustrator file) & Lauren Script Font (dafont.com)

And, just in case you want a super easy invitation to print and customize, here’s an invite you can print out and fill in. Just click on the image and you can download and print from scribd:
